Jen's Story
Sarcoma Sucks. You might have picked up on that if you’ve come this far.
It’s taken far too much from my family – and the families of nearly 17,000 that will be diagnosed with this rare but aggressive cancer this year.
Sarcoma accounts for 1% of adult cancers, but even worse it impacts 15-20 percent of childhood cancers. Sarcoma is sometimes called the Forgotten Cancer, but I can assure you those that have been impacted will never forget it.
This disease invades primarily through bones and soft tissues. It can be aggressive, mean, and nasty. It can be a painful fight that will test the strength and will of even the strongest who face it down.
But we don’t have to let them face it down alone.
Jen fought Sarcoma with everything she had. We had a village supporting us – a group we will forever be grateful to. The way we were prayed for and loved and lifted up meant the world to Jen and to all of us. She didn’t feel alone, even in the hardest of times.
But not every Sarcoma patient is so blessed with the same support. There are those suffering these same trials in silence, feeling lost and alone and hopeless. Thursday need our support.
The Sarcoma Sucks 5k+ event is designed to be a soft launch of what we plan to be an annual event to benefit Sarcoma research and support patients and their families via the Sarcoma Foundation of America.
One of the hardest parts of Jen’s battle with Sarcoma was losing her mobility and independence, limiting her ability to enjoy her family and friends and being outside.
We want to raise funds and awareness to battle this rare and aggressive form of cancer by moving our bodies and celebrating the start of Spring.
A standard 5k is 3.1 miles, but as Jen’s birthday is March 20 (or 3.20 if you will) – we are doing 3.20 total miles, a standard 5k race, with a 0.1 mile memorial walk after the finish line.
This event will be a work in progress. we can’t promise it will be a world-class 5k+ event (yet!), but we will work hard to make it a success – and have fun while we are at it.
We will have flights for Competitive Runners, for Fun Runners, and Walkers.
We also ask those who can’t join in-person to join us in spirit by going 3.20 miles on foot, bike, or however you want to move. We need you in this fight.
Be sure to donate and post pictures to our pages on Facebook and Instagram. Virtual participants may still Register or donate directly to our fundraising page with the Sarcoma Foundation.
